Looking for a laid-back way to explore Marathon's beautiful waterways? This scenic harbor tour with Johnny Maddox Charters Papa 31 gives you front-row seats to some of the most gorgeous views in the Florida Keys. Captain Rip takes you through Marathon Harbor and Boot Key Harbor at a relaxed pace, perfect for soaking up the coastal charm without any pressure. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, want to show visiting family around, or just need a break from the usual tourist spots, this cruise hits the sweet spot between adventure and relaxation.
This isn't your typical crowded tour boat experience. With just four guests max, you get personalized attention and can actually hear Captain Rip share stories about the area's history and local fishing culture. The boat is clean and comfortable, equipped with everything you need for a smooth ride through calm harbor waters. You'll cruise past working marinas, local fishing spots, and get those postcard-worthy shots of Marathon's skyline from the water. The flexible schedule means if you spot dolphins or want to linger at a particularly scenic spot, there's no rush to move on. Bring your own drinks and snacks to make it feel like your own private floating patio.
Captain Rip knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he'll show you why Marathon Harbor is considered one of the most protected and scenic harbors in the Keys. The tour typically covers both Marathon Harbor and Boot Key Harbor, where you'll see everything from million-dollar yachts to working shrimp boats. The route takes advantage of the area's naturally calm waters, making it comfortable even for guests who might get queasy on rougher offshore trips. You'll learn about the local maritime industry, spot residential areas only visible from the water, and get the inside scoop on the best restaurants and bars to hit after your cruise. The boat's shallow draft means you can get close to mangrove-lined shores and see areas that bigger vessels can't access.
"We scheduled this trip months ahead of time to celebrate my birthday in Marathon. Unfortunately, weeks of windy weather made it impossible to fish the reef or wrecks. However, Captain Rip worked his magic! We still had a fantastic day, with all three of us—including our nine-year-old son—catching fish. We spent the day fishing near a bridge, where our son acted as First Mate. We ended up landing Mangrove Snapper, Black Grouper, and a few other species. It was a fun time on the water, complete with great conversation! Thanks so much!" - Eric. "Rip was excellent, taking the time to explain the fishing procedures he uses. He also shared some interesting history about the surrounding area, local people, and general fishing information. He's a very comfortable person to be around and worked hard to put us on the fish. We would definitely use him again." - Edward. "My wife and I booked the Sunset Fishing trip with Captain Rip, and it was fantastic! We started our evening leaving the dock with a glass of wine in hand and were celebrating our first catch soon after reaching the blue water. Captain Rip was an excellent guide, offering great fishing direction alongside valuable local knowledge and activity suggestions for our time in the Keys. While clouds kept us from seeing a traditional sunset, we still captured some beautiful photos of the sun peaking through the clouds at the end of the day. Best of all, we returned with enough fresh fish to feed us for a whole week. What a truly great experience!" - Richard.
Marathon's harbor waters are home to an amazing variety of marine life that you'll likely encounter during your cruise. Bottlenose dolphins are regular residents here, often seen hunting in small pods near the harbor entrance or playing in the boat wakes. These intelligent mammals are most active during incoming tides when baitfish get pushed into the shallows. Watch for their characteristic dorsal fins cutting through the surface, and don't be surprised if they decide to ride alongside the boat for a few minutes. Manatees also frequent these protected waters, especially during cooler months from November through March when they seek out warmer shallow areas. These gentle giants can weigh over 1,000 pounds and move surprisingly gracefully through the water. Captain Rip knows their favorite hangouts and will slow down to give you a respectful look at these endangered marine mammals. The harbor's mangrove edges teem with wading birds like great blue herons, snowy egrets, and the occasional roseate spoonbill. These areas also shelter juvenile fish, sea turtles, and rays that guests love photographing in the clear, shallow water.
If you're tired of cookie-cutter tourist activities and want to see Marathon from a local's perspective, this harbor tour delivers exactly that. Captain Rip's knowledge of the area and relaxed approach makes this perfect for couples looking for a romantic evening cruise, families wanting to show kids the beauty of the Keys, or small groups celebrating special occasions. The intimate boat size means you won't feel rushed or crowded, and the calm harbor waters ensure everyone stays comfortable throughout the trip. Don't forget to bring your camera, some refreshments, and maybe a light jacket for evening cruises. Book ahead, especially during peak season, because word is getting out about this top-rated local experience that shows off Marathon's natural beauty without the typical tourist crowds.

Captain Rip is outstanding! He is experienced, knowledgeable, and truly committed to working hard to provide clients with an excellent fishing trip. He successfully put us on the fish and took the time to teach us how to catch them. He also kept us entertained with great stories throughout the day. He filleted our catch, which led to a delicious snapper dinner with our wives. You simply won't find a better guide!

Captain Rip is a highly knowledgeable fisherman. He positioned us perfectly and expertly used different techniques, allowing us to catch a nice-sized black grouper and a mutton snapper. We would have landed more, but the sharks intervened! Overall, a great time was had by everyone.

My husband and I had some really great strikes, and he was thrilled to even land a shark—that truly made his day! We would absolutely book this trip again.

The experience was fantastic from start to finish! The boat was immaculate, and Captain Rip was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. He worked incredibly hard for us and provided high-quality, extensive equipment. Communication was great, and he reviewed all safety procedures before we even left the dock. He truly went above and beyond. As two females in our late 50s, we appreciated that he treated us with respect and never patronized us. He tailored the level of involvement perfectly to our preferences (I wanted to work; my friend wanted service!). We caught lots of fish, but honestly, it would have been a great trip even without the catch. Highly recommended!

Great company aboard a newer, clean boat! We successfully limited out on our catch and spent a genuinely pleasant day on the water. We had our haul prepared at a local restaurant and enjoyed a great meal while watching the sunset.

Choosing Captain Rip and Riplines Charters was the best decision for my sons and me. We had a great time on the water during the Sunset outing. Captain Rip is incredibly knowledgeable and a pleasure to be around, and yes, we caught a wide variety of fish that provided us with lifelong memories. I particularly appreciated how Captain Rip took the time to work with my teenage sons, teaching them proper fishing styles and techniques. We would absolutely book this trip again.
