Looking for a fishing adventure that puts you right where the action is? This Marathon-based charter takes you to some of the most productive waters in the Florida Keys, where reefs and wrecks hold some serious fish. Captain Johnny Maddox and his crew know these waters like the back of their hand, and they'll put you on spots that consistently produce. Whether you're after bottom fish around the reef structure or pelagics cruising the wrecks, this trip delivers the kind of fishing that keeps you coming back. With options from 4 to 8 hours, you can tailor your day to match your fishing goals and schedule.
Your day starts at Marathon's marina, where you'll meet Captain Johnny and his experienced crew aboard a well-maintained vessel that comfortably handles up to 6 anglers. The boat comes equipped with all the tackle you'll need, from heavy bottom rigs for grouper and snapper to lighter setups for the speedsters like mahi and kingfish. The crew knows exactly which spots are firing on any given day, and they're not afraid to move around until they find the bite. You'll fish a mix of natural reefs and artificial wrecks, each offering different opportunities depending on conditions and what's moving through the area. The best part? No fuel surcharges to worry about, so you can focus on fishing instead of watching the meter.
The fishing here revolves around structure, and that's where the crew really shines. Around the reefs, you'll drop baits to the bottom for grouper and snapper using circle hooks and fresh bait. The wrecks offer a different game entirely – sometimes you're bottom fishing, other times you're working the mid-water column where cobia and amberjack like to cruise. When conditions are right, the crew will put out trolling spreads as you move between spots, picking up mahi, kingfish, and wahoo that are drawn to the same structure that holds the bottom fish. Live bait fishing is also a big part of the program, especially when targeting larger predators that patrol these productive areas. The crew handles all the rigging and bait prep, so even beginners can jump right in and start catching fish.
"Awesome experience, even through the 4-to-8-foot swells! The crew never gave up, keeping us rocking by constantly finding and catching Mahi and tuna. If you're looking for a charter that knows how to put you on the spots for awesome fishing—and put you on the big ones—this is the one to book!" - ASHTON
"What an awesome trip! The crew was fantastic — laid-back, calm, and made everything feel easy with no pressure. We hit our limit on yellowtail, and their recommendation to have it prepared at Lazy Days was spot on. Couldn't have asked for a better day!" - Joseph
"We had an awesome day on the water — all six of us caught fish! Ended the trip with 36 in total plus two sharks. The crew was friendly, helpful, and really made the experience enjoyable. When we got back to the dock, it was clear we had one of the most successful trips out there. Highly recommend!" - Brandie
Red Grouper are the bread and butter of the reef fishing here, and for good reason. These chunky bottom dwellers love the ledges and holes around Marathon's reef systems, and they put up a serious fight when hooked. Most reds you'll catch run between 5 and 15 pounds, though bigger fish are always possible. They're most active during the cooler months from October through April, and they're absolutely delicious on the table. What makes red grouper so special is their willingness to bite – they're not as spooky as some of their cousins, making them perfect for anglers of all skill levels.
Atlantic Bonito show up in good numbers during their migration periods, typically in spring and fall. These small tunas are built for speed, and they'll test your drag system when they make their initial runs. Most bonito here run 3 to 8 pounds, and they're fantastic on light tackle. They travel in schools, so when you find one, there are usually more around. Bonito make excellent bait for larger predators, but they're also great eating when prepared fresh. Look for them around the offshore wrecks where baitfish concentrate.
Wahoo are the speed demons of the wreck fishing world, capable of reaching speeds over 60 mph. These toothy predators patrol the deeper wrecks and reef edges, ambushing anything that looks like an easy meal. Marathon's wahoo typically run from 15 to 40 pounds, with the occasional monster pushing 50 or more. They're most active in the early morning and late afternoon, and they have a habit of showing up when you least expect them. Wahoo are prized for their white, flaky meat that's perfect for grilling or making sushi.
Great Barracuda are year-round residents around Marathon's reefs and wrecks, and they're always ready to put on a show. These aggressive predators will hit just about anything that moves, and they're known for their spectacular jumps and blistering runs. Most cuda here run 5 to 20 pounds, though 30-pounders are caught regularly. They're particularly active around structure where smaller fish concentrate. While many anglers release barracuda, smaller ones are excellent eating when prepared properly.
Black Grouper are the heavyweight champions of the reef, and catching one is always a highlight of any trip. These powerful fish can exceed 50 pounds and are found around the deeper reefs and wrecks offshore. Black grouper are more particular about their feeding times, often biting best during moving tides and low light periods. They're

Captain Johnny and Nick were fantastic! There were six of us on board, and everyone had a great time. We even enjoyed our fresh catch for lunch at the Key Fishery Restaurant right at the marina. Awesome experience all around!

The bite was a bit slow, but Captain Jim and Chance gave it their all to get us on the fish. They were dedicated, hardworking, and made sure we were having a good time throughout the trip. While we didn’t catch as much as we hoped, their effort never let up. Highly recommend this crew for a fun and well-run fishing experience!

The Captain demonstrated deep knowledge and explained every step clearly. The Skipper was incredibly fast, helpful, and friendly—he was right on top of things the moment the fish started biting. We had high hopes for this trip, and catching both snapper and mahi-mahi made it a success.

We had a wonderful time out fishing! The crew was fantastic and worked hard to help us catch more than enough fish to provide dinner. We are already looking forward to booking our next trip with them.

We had an absolutely fantastic morning out on the water with Skipper Brian. The action started immediately: my son, Adam, hooked a fish on the very first drop, and they just kept biting after that! Our catch included a couple of Blue Runners, an uncountable number of Yellow Snappers, a Rainbow Runner, and a small Bonito to finish the morning. We followed Brian's recommendation and took our catch to a local restaurant where it tasted incredible. This trip is highly recommended!

The seas were quite rough, making it a challenging day for fishing. Captain Johnny explored several different locations, but unfortunately, we didn't have any luck with the bite. Despite the tough conditions, we still had an enjoyable day on the water. As the saying goes, that's why it's called "fishing," not "catching!"

This was truly the best fishing trip ever! Captain Alex put us on the fish almost instantly—literally within five minutes of dropping our lines. We caught several different varieties of fish and would strongly recommend that anyone looking for a trip book with Alex; you absolutely won't be disappointed! Thank you, Alex, for all your effort in making this fishing trip so memorable!

Atlantic bonito are the speedsters that show up in big schools, especially during cooler months. These silver bullets with dark stripes typically run 3-8 pounds and can hit 40 mph when they want to. You'll find them in open water, often feeding on the surface where birds are diving. They're not much for eating here in Florida - pretty oily - but they put up a solid scrap on light tackle. When a school is feeding, they'll hit just about anything you throw at them. We catch them trolling fast with small lures or casting into the feeding frenzy. What's fun is watching their dorsal fins cutting the surface like mini sharks. Pro tip: when you see birds working, get there quick - bonito schools move fast and don't stick around long.

Black grouper are the heavyweights of our reef system - powerful, stubborn fighters that'll test your tackle and your patience. Most average 15-25 pounds, but we've had some monsters over 50 pounds come up from the deeper wrecks. They love structure - ledges, wrecks, and rocky bottom from 60-200 feet, moving shallow in winter and deeper in summer. November through May is when they're most active for spawning. What guests love is that raw power once hooked - they'll make one strong dive for the rocks and then it's a tug-of-war. The meat is also premium quality with a mild, firm texture. These fish don't mess around - they inhale bait whole, so when you feel that thump, start winding immediately. Heavy tackle is a must - 30-50 pound class with at least 100-pound leader.

Great barracuda are the attitude-packed predators that cruise our reefs and shallow waters year-round. Most run 2-4 feet long, but the big girls can push 5+ feet and 30 pounds. You'll find them around structure - reefs, wrecks, and even shallow flats - usually near the surface. They're curious fish that'll often follow the boat or check out divers. Spring is prime time when they get more aggressive for spawning. What makes them fun is that explosive strike and wild fight - they'll jump, make powerful runs, and never give up easy. They're not great eating due to potential toxins, but as a sport fish they're hard to beat. My tip: use a wire leader and keep your hands clear when landing - those teeth are no joke, and big ones will try to bite right through the net.

These rusty-red beauties are what put grouper fishing on the map around here. Most run 5-10 pounds, though we've seen some push 20+ pounds on the deeper wrecks. They hang around rocky bottoms, ledges, and our local wrecks from 30-150 feet, with the bigger ones usually deeper. Red grouper are aggressive feeders - they'll slam shrimp, crab, or cut bait without much hesitation. What makes them special is that tough fight once hooked - they'll dive straight for the rocks and test your drag. The meat is outstanding too, with that sweet, flaky texture that makes great fish tacos. My tip: once you feel that thump, start cranking immediately. Don't give them time to get back into the structure or you'll be re-rigging.

Wahoo are the rockets of our waters - hitting 50+ mph and making screaming runs that'll test your reel's drag. Most run 20-40 pounds out here, but we've seen some push 60+. They cruise the blue water and around our offshore wrecks, usually in the top 60 feet. Summer through fall is prime time, especially July through November. What makes wahoo special is that explosive strike and blistering initial run - they'll strip line like nothing else. The meat is also top-notch, white and flaky with a mild taste that's perfect for the grill. We troll fast with wire leaders since their razor teeth will cut through anything else. My advice: when one hits, just hold on and let the drag do its work - trying to stop that first run usually ends with a broken line.
